Privacy Policy for Sokutan
Last updated: June 17, 2026
Sokutan (“the extension”, “we”, “us”) is a browser extension that helps people learn Japanese by providing instant word lookups, dual subtitles, and vocabulary saving. This policy explains what data the extension handles and how.
The short version
Sokutan does not collect, sell, or share your personal data. Everything you save stays on your own device. We do not run any analytics or tracking.
Information we handle
Saved on your device only:
- Your settings (for example, furigana and romaji toggles, and whether the extension is enabled).
- Vocabulary words you choose to save, along with the sentence they appeared in.
- The Japanese dictionary and tokenizer data the extension downloads so lookups work quickly and offline.
This information is stored locally in your browser (using the browser’s storage and IndexedDB). It never leaves your device unless you choose to export it.
Page content: To detect and look up Japanese words, the extension reads text on the web pages you visit and the subtitles on supported video sites. This reading happens entirely on your device. We do not transmit the pages you visit, the words you look up, or your browsing history to any server.
Data we download
To function, the extension downloads files from the following third-party sources. These are one-way downloads of reference data; we do not send your personal information to them:
- jsDelivr CDN – the Japanese tokenizer dictionary.
- GitHub – the Jitendex Japanese-English dictionary and audio data.
- Our configuration server – a small configuration file used to keep the extension up to date.
When your browser requests these files, the host may automatically receive standard technical information such as your IP address, as is normal for any internet request. We do not control or store this information.
Data we do not collect
- We do not collect personal or financial information.
- We do not collect your browsing history.
- We do not use analytics, advertising trackers, or cookies for tracking.
- We do not sell or share your data with third parties.
Exporting your data
You can export your saved vocabulary as a file (for example, to import into Anki). When you export, the file is created locally and saved by your browser. What you do with that file afterward is up to you.
Feedback you send us
If you contact us through our feedback or bug-report form, we receive the information you choose to provide (such as your message and any contact details you include) so we can respond. We use it only to address your feedback.
Children’s privacy
Sokutan is a general-purpose study tool and is not directed at children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect any personal information from them.
Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. Changes will be posted on this page with a new “Last updated” date.
